Quantum cognition beyond Hilbert space II: Applications

چکیده
The research on human cognition has recently benefited from the use of the mathematical formalism of quantum theory in Hilbert space. However, cognitive situations exist which indicate that the Hilbert space structure, and the associated Born rule, would be insufficient to provide a satisfactory modeling of the collected data, so that one needs to go beyond Hilbert space. In Part I of this paper we follow this direction and present a general tension-reduction (GTR) model, in the ambit of an operational and realistic framework for human cognition [1]. In this Part II we apply this non-Hilbertian quantum-like model to faithfully reproduce the probabilities of the ‘Clinton/Gore’ and ‘Rose/Jackson’ experiments on question order effects. We also explain why the GTR-model is needed if one wants to deal, in a fully consistent way, with response replicability and unpacking effects.

Quantum Cognition Beyond Hilbert Space: Fundamentals and Applications
The formalism of quantum theory in Hilbert space has been applied with success to the modeling and explanation of several cognitive phenomena, whereas traditional cognitive approaches were problematical. However, this ‘quantum cognition paradigm’ was recently challenged by its proven impossibility to simultaneously model ‘question order effects’ and ‘response replicability’. In Part I of this p...
متن کاملWeak Quantum Theory: Formal Framework and Selected Applications
Two key concepts of quantum theory, complementarity and entanglement, are considered with respect to their significance in and beyond physics. An axiomatically formalized, weak version of quantum theory, more general than the ordinary quantum theory of physical systems, is described. Its mathematical structure generalizes the algebraic approach to ordinary quantum theory. The crucial formal fea...
متن کاملUnification of classical and quantum probabilistic formalisms
We demonstrate that the contextual approach to Kolmogorov probability model gives the possibility to unify this conventional model of probability with the quantum (Hilbert space) probability model. In fact, the Kolmogorov model can exhibit all distinguishing features of the quantum probability model. In particular, by using the contextual (interference) formula of total probability one can cons...
متن کاملA Formula of Total Probability with Interference Term and the Hilbert Space Representation of the Contextual Kolmogorovian Model
We compare the classical Kolmogorov and quantum probability models. We show that the gap between these model is not so huge as it was commonly believed. The main structures of quantum theory (interference of probabilities, Born's rule, complex probabilistic amplitudes, Hilbert state space, representation of observables by operators) are present in a latent form in the Kolmogorov model. In parti...
متن کاملEntanglement Zoo II: Examples in Physics and Cognition
We have recently presented a general scheme enabling quantum modeling of different types of situations that violate Bell’s inequalities [1]. In this paper, we specify this scheme for a combination of two concepts. We work out a quantum Hilbert space model where ‘entangled measurements’ occur in addition to the expected ‘entanglement between the component concepts’, or ‘state entanglement’. We e...
